Presbyterian Women's News

The 2008 Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership award was presented January 18 to our industrious and creative fellowship coordinator, Mary Jo Van Gerpen. Mary Jo’s tireless volunteer work starts early in the day and continues well past most of our bedtimes. No way could she be coordinating events schedules, planning all details of our fellowship activities from staffing to food shopping, serving as a dedicated deacon and member of the Presbyterian Women’s Coordinating team, taking the lead in interdenominational efforts such as Church Women United or Moms in Touch International and ever close her eyes! Both the Polly Eldridge Circle and the Evangelism Fellowship Committee are honored by her faithful attendance as well. Further, she almost missed the presentation of her award on the 18th because she had volunteered to serve in the nursery that Sunday, and Donan had to gently tell her she wasn’t needed, so she should go to church with her family.

We have Mary Jo to thank for more than one can put in words, but we can’t fail to mention the consistent supply of coffee and cookies she makes sure are always ready after each of our church services and the efficient assignment and reminder schedule she maintains for this mainstay activity of our church. Few are probably aware, however, that no matter who is on her assignment list, it’s Mary Jo who is here first thing on Sunday mornings, almost without fail. She heats the water for the coffee makers, measures out the fair-trade coffee, fills the air pots, arranges the centerpiece, and sets a very attractive refreshment table for the pleasure of all of us, her faith family. Mary Jo is a leader for the Lord and a servant leader and encourager. She not only does, she listens. Her faith is evident, and a model for us all. Her cheerful and willing response to God’s call to lead in our faith family has made a big difference in our lives.

Quilts For Mission

Several quilts have been distributed to people who need them, such as a family whose home was destroyed by fire.  Some are given through  "Home Start"; a young boy was very happy to receive a quilt that featured "cowboys".  Each quilt has a label saying " Sewn for you with LOVE by Presbyterian Women".  You are welcome to become involved. Helpers to sew, press, sort, design, and tie are needed. We attempt to keep several completed units on hand to meet emergencies.  We sew as often as possible. The Sunday bulletin is the best source for times and dates to gather in room #4, downstairs in the church to sew for local mission.  Contact Donna DeBolt, 882-9229 or Alice DeShazer, 882-1500 for further information.
